Just a couple fun pictures from our studio session with 6mo old James. My favorite shot of the shoot might have been the “behind the scenes glimpse where James is having his hair quaffed by his mom… life is tough when you’re a baby model!
Just a couple of our favorites from Stella’s 3mo photo session in the studio. What a beautiful little girl! The trick to catching great shots like these is timing. It’s best to pick a time of day when your baby is usually calm. For most little ones the morning is a great choice but for Stella it was the evening, we took these around 5 in the evening and she was the perfect subject!! =)
Just a few of our favorite pictures from a winter wedding in Plymouth Michigan that we shot with Terpstra Photo. It was absolutely FREEZING… maybe 15º but the windchill made it feel even colder! Of course the bride was up for anything and we managed to shoot quickly and capture some really fun photos before we had to RUN for the warmth of the limo! If you’re planning a winter
wedding one of the keys to getting great photos is to scout out locations ahead of time, have a plan for the pictures you want and bring a warm coat! We always recommend something oversized with a nylon or silk interior for the bride so it easily slips on and off over the wedding dress! To see more pictures from Dean and Puja’s Indian wedding celebration the following day check out the pictures on Terpstra Photos blog here: Indian Wedding at Planterra

Here are just a few of our favorite engagement photos from our session in downtown Chicago with Brooke & Joel. We waited all winter hoping to catch a snowy day for these engagement pictures but we just never seemed to time it right so a few weeks ago we finally said lets just go for it! It wasn’t snowy but it was definitely COLD!!! Brooke & Joel were amazing to work with and of
course Downtown Chicago is hard to beat when it comes to beautiful locations for engagement pictures! While we didn’t wind up with any snow I think we still managed to capture some beautiful pictures and I for one am thrilled with the way they turned out! All the best to this happy couple, I can’t wait to work with you guys when we can actually feel our fingers!! =)

I really enjoy the first photo because of the color of the sky and the trees surrounding the couple in the center. I also love the photo with the dog, it is such an everyday scene but still perfect because of the look the couple has between each other.
picture perfect for everything from portraits to a ceremony to a cocktail hour! While the rustic barn and incredible views certainly wowed all of the wedding guests my favorite memory from the day has to be the groom and groomsmen trying to tie their bow ties… a suggestion for all you future grooms out there, do NOT wait till the day of your wedding to try and tie your first bow tie! It makes for funny pictures and a LATE groom! But alls well that ends well and this wedding day ended in spectacular fashion with a beautiful tented reception and pictures in the barn with the rain pouring down. What an unforgettable day, I certainly hope to return to Snow Moon Ranch again for more weddings! Congrats to Autumn & Andrew!

New Buffalo is one of my favorite locations for family pictures on the beach. Big beaches, low dunes, and lots of sweeping horizon lines make for a beautiful setting, of course it’s hard to go wrong when you’re working with a family as easy going as this!! My favorite shot of the night has to be the grandparents at dusk, I wish I had a shot like this of my grandparents!
Aside from having a great location to work with this family did a great job with their wardrobe mixing and matching colors that all work with one another and using the navy blue to tie it all together. Wardrobes are hard to figure out when you’re planning family pictures and for good
reason, you want everyone to FIT together without actually looking like you are trying to match. Of course we aren’t all lucky enough to have a stylist in the family so if you’re struggling with what to wear give us a call before your shoot and we’d be more than happy to help you figure out what to wear so you look your best at picture time! =)
No one wants it to rain on their wedding day, especially if their wedding is on the beach! But if it does happen to rain I hope you’re like Marissa and Josh and don’t let it dampen your spirits, keep you from smiling, or allow it distract you from the reason you’ve gathered all your family and friends together to celebrate with you. I love that in spite of the hurricane rains (actually
remnants of hurricane Issac) the bride was so excited to get married that she couldn’t help but smile as she ran through the torrential rain to get married to Josh! What an amazing wedding to be a part of, I think it’s fair to say it’s a wedding that no one will ever forget… not because it was raining, but because the bride and groom where so incredibly happy in spite of the weather! Congratulations Marissa and Josh!!!

I love shooting family pictures on the beach here in Saint Joseph Mi no matter what but especially when I get to work with this family! They’re fun to work with, they’re up for anything, and they know what they want which certainly makes my life easy and my job FUN!! They also manage to always pick dates months in advance where the weather just seems to work out perfectly!!!

Rocky Gap Beach is one of the best beaches for weddings in Saint Joseph Mi, it’s less than 5 minutes from town yet far enough away from most of the tourist attractions that it stays relatively quiet on a beautiful summer afternoon. This beach wedding started
off at Salon Devoir with pictures of the hair and makeup before heading over to the Boulevard Inn where the bride and groom got ready. We finished prep with a cute shot of the Bride and Groom ALMOST seeing each other for the first time (but not quite) before we jumped onto the Sunset Coast trolly to head to Rocky Gap Beach for the wedding Ceremony. The sun was out and while it was a little warm no one seemed to care as they watched the beautiful ceremony unfold. Once Megan and Michael
where done tying the knot it was time to jump back on the trolly and head to Tiscornia Beach for wedding photos before ending up at the Veranda for the wedding reception. Check back soon for some of the amazing pictures from Megan and Michaels wedding Reception at the Veranda!
Another beautiful Blue Dress Barn wedding! Can’t say I’m surprised, it seems like we always end up with great weather and fun couples whenever we work here! After the ceremony the bride challenged me to find a couple of spots “away from the barn” where we could do pictures without spending a whole lot of time driving there. We managed to find a couple of great
locations for pictures with the bridal party and the best thing was that they were all less than 3 minutes from the barn. Changing up locations made for a great mix of images with the traditional Barn Wedding photos and not having to spend a ton of time driving meant we spent more time shooting and less time driving! All in all a fantastic day for a wedding at the Blue Dress Barn! Congratulations Tanya & Patrick!

We hear and see all sorts of great ideas for weddings and when it comes to the end of the night having sparklers after the wedding is probably the most popular and let’s be serious… cost effective send off, but occasionally you’ll find a couple that really wants to go out with a bang and the perfect way to do that is to hire your very own team of professional pyrotechnics!
Enter Michigan Family Fireworks! This weekend their team of pyrotechnic experts set off an amazing fireworks display for all the wedding guests at Don & Rachel’s wedding. We’ve seen some people do their own fireworks but have to say these where by for the most spectacular fireworks we’ve seen at any wedding reception and the best thing was that everything was set up and choreographed for the bride and groom. What an amazing way to end the night!
The pavillion at Jean Klock Park has to be one of the best locations for a beach wedding anywhere in Southwest Michigan, or anywhere else along lake Michigan for that matter. If you want a beach wedding but don’t want to make your guests walk down to the waters edge this location should be at the top of your list for ceremony sites by the lake! Of course as much as I enjoyed shooting all the details and working at this beautiful location what made the day truly special was the way the bride
smiled when she looked at the groom. The joy on their faces as they said their vows was almost enough to make the photographer tear up… I admit to nothing!! =) What a joyful day to be a part of, so often editing a wedding can be a tedious and very time consuming process that takes quite a few hours but I don’t think I stopped smiling the entire time I edited this wedding! Of course I have to give SOME credit to the bride who sent me a sweet play list to listen to while I edited the photos, did I mention how thoughtful this couple is?? All in all a great day at a beautiful location! If you’re trying to decide between a beach wedding at Jean Klock Park or a pavilion wedding a Jean Klock Park, I really don’t think you can go wrong and I think these pictures definitely prove that! Congratulations to the bride and groom, thank you so much for allowing us to be a part of your day!

Smiling is contagious…and although some don’t like to admit it, crying is, too. I’m happy you liked the playlist. Thank you for the moments captured.
Just a quick picture this time, it’s from back in February and I just came across it and thought I’d put it up. It’s one of my favorite engagement photos ever from Milennium Park near the famous Bean in downtown Chicago. I’ve never been down here when it wasn’t at least a little crowded so to capture the couple under the bean by themselves was pretty cool! Of course I don’t get the credit here, that goes to the couple for choosing February in the city in the hopes of crazy weather and some unique shots. The weather was just plain cold… but thats probably why we got this shot!! I’d say it definitely qualifies as unique! =) Gotta love working with adventurous couples like this!! More to come…

That is one of the coolest Bean shots I’ve ever seen. And I feel like I’ve seen every Bean shot there is to see. Kudos to you. I can’t wait for you and your keen eyes to shoot my wedding. I promise we’ll be adventurous too.
We brought our Smilebooth to the Blue Dress Barn a couple weeks ago and were told that the only thing thats more fun than taking your own pictures in the photobooth is watching your friends and family take THEIR pictures in the photobooth. We couldn’t agree more! Of course we also loved the simple homemade bunting flags that the bride brought to customize the backdrop! Here are just a few of our favorite shots from throughout the night! Check out our Photobooth page for more info!
Just a few of my favorites from last weeks family portrait session in Coloma Michigan. While these family pictures on the beach are certainly beautiful we actually spent the entire day with the family shooting everything from the kids swimming to a bridal shower!
Talk about an amazing array of fun pictures and wonderful memories!! I’ll share of the fun stuff we capture during the day later, for now I just wanted to put up a few of my favorites from sunset on the beach! Just a tip for all you families with youngsters out there… if you’re considering scheduling a beach session at sunset, consider scheduling your session in the fall/spring when the sun sets much earlier!! So what do you do if it rains on your wedding day? Or worse, what if it rains on your wedding day and you’re wedding happens to be on the beach at Jean Klock Park? If you’d ask Devin and Dave they’d tell you not to change a thing! We get all sorts of questions about what to do if it rains on the wedding day, should we have back up locations, should we move the ceremony inside, should we wait and see if the weather blows through? Well Devin and Dave were faced with exactly that question the morning of their wedding. With a chance of showers all day it was nearly impossible to tell what the weather would
do and while that might have dampened some brides moods Devin was all smiles as she prepared to walk down the aisle and mary Dave on the Beach. As luck would have it, it began to drizzle as the guests walked out to be seated and began to rain as the bride pulled up to the beach. Not to be deterred the guests popped out their umbrellas and neither the bride nor groom could help but smile as they looked at each other for the first time through the rain. While the guests may have left a little damp, spirits where high and I’m pretty sure everyone would agree it was an incredibly special and unforgettable wedding! After the
ceremony the rain kept coming and we did a few quick portraits on the beach before running to the bus and heading across the river to The Veranda in Saint Joseph Mi for the reception. Of course The Veranda is one of the best places on the lake for a wedding reception and from there on it was one hec of a celebration. So what do you do if it rains on your wedding day? I’m sure the answer will be slightly different for every bride but if you’re willing to just go for it your photographer is sure to get amazing pictures, and you and your guests are sure to walk away with some incredibly special memories!
Special Thanks to the Bride and Groom for allowing us to be a part of their wedding day and to Stella Event Design for making sure everything was picture perfect inspite of the weather! =)

Another great photo shoot, Ben. This is amazing. Jean Klock Beach is where my parents took me as a little kid, and where my mother spent many lovely beach days–Megan McDonald Coriell’s grandma!! Any place on Lake Michigan is grand–and with you as a photographer, it’s even better.

I never cease to be amazed by the number of beautiful lakeshore wedding venues that are tucked into unexpected places along the beaches of Lake Michigan. Gintaras Resort is one such venue, and the fact that it isn’t more popular amazes me, it offers incredible views of lake Michigan, seclusion, beach access, and even the option to rent out several small cabins for guests!
Of course as a photographer I get excited about all of the fun places to take pictures but what really makes this place great from a photography standpoint is that there’s no time wasted traveling! You can shoot in old log cabins, in an old colorful rec room, and down at the beach without having to leave the property. All in all Gintaras Resort is a fantastic place to get married and Megan and Anthonys wedding was picture perfect with beautiful weather and an incredible sunset… and as if that wasn’t enough they topped it all off with some amazing Gelato from the GelatoSmith. This was definitely one of my favorite weddings of the year! A big thank you to Megan and Anthony for letting me photograph their special day, and also to Stella Event Design who coordinated all the details and most importantly the timeline that allowed us to capture so many amazing pictures throughout the day!

The Blue Dress Barn is an authentic barn thats been converted into a wedding ceremony and reception site in Southwest Michigan. While there are several unique wedding reception venues in the area the Blue Dress Barn has to be at the top of a short list of truly one of a kind venues that our area has to offer to brides looking for a country wedding. Scott and Jessie choose the
venue for exactly that reason and while the day may look BEAUTIFUL, it started out with blowing winds and driving rain… remarkably neither bride or groom let the weather phase them as you can see here they were rewarded with a beautiful sunny afternoon and what ultimately ended up being the perfect day for a wedding reception in the Blue Dress Barn! If you’re planning
an outdoor ceremony and worried about the weather you have to be ready for anything BUT for the most part the weather here tends to blow through rather quickly and if you need/want to you can always speed things up or post pone them just a bit to fit your ceremony in. Of course a venue like The Blue Dress Barn would also give you the option of doing the ceremony inside as well
but I’ve yet to have to photograph a ceremony inside at the Barn! While the day may have started a bit rough weather wise we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful finish for either the evening or the pictures!! Congratulations to the very lucky couple!

If every family where as easy to work with as the Smiy family I’d be awfully tempted to give up shooting weddings and just do family pictures for the fun of it! I don’t think I’ve laughed this much or had that much fun during a family portrait shoot in a long time! Definitely a great family to work with! The guy in the olive sweater also happens to be my long time assistant Mike… one of
the smartest, most professional and hard working people I’ve ever had the pleasure of working with! He’s started his own wedding cinematography business: Hueline Pictures (if you’re looking for a cinematographer you’ve got to check him out!) and is contemplating heading out to LA to pursue a career in the film industry. He will be sorely missed as an assistant and cinematographer but I think he’s got a bright future and he’s promised to fly me out to the set of whatever he’s producing some day to take pictures so I’ll be rooting for him! All in all we had a great time hiking around the Grandmere dunes taking pictures and while most of the fall color had disappeared we managed to find just enough of it in spots to really make the pictures pop!
Just a few of our favorite Chicago engagement photos from a fall shoot with Laura and Rudy. We kept things simple and hit up some of the our favorite Chicago engagement picture locations like Michigan Avenue, Millenium Park, and the Art Institute. I always love being in the city in the fall, the colors are beautiful, the air is crisp, and its just such a beautiful time to be out walking around. We were constantly working around the crowds of tourists and other photographers but in the end we managed to have a lot of fun, stay warm, and of course… get some great pictures!!

When Jake and Amanda planned their beautiful vineyard wedding at Willow Harbor Vineyards in Three Oaks Michigan I’m sure they didn’t envision a rainy wedding day and yet thats exactly how the day started. We began by dodging rain drops in New Buffalo where the bride had her hair and makeup done, then we drove to Willow Harbor to get ready in the charming bridal suite. By the time the bride was dressed the rain
had stopped and while it still looked threatening we decided to do the bride and grooms first look in one of the vineyards which is the perfect setting for a reveal. From there we took off for weko beach in Bridgman Mi for wedding photos with the wedding party. Then it was back to Willow Harbor where the bride rode up to the ceremony in a horse drawn carriage. The ceremony was beautiful and while the skies remained
overcast the rain stayed away and we ended up with an absolutely gorgeous evening for the tented wedding reception. From a photographers stand point Willow Harbor offers a bride and groom lost of flexibility when it comes to locations for gorgeous wedding pictures, whether you do them in the vineyards, the barn, or head to a nearby beach you simply can’t go wrong! Of course it helps to have a go with the flow approach and the incredible team at Stella Event Design on hand to make sure you’re ready for anything! If you’re planning on getting married and looking for an outdoor wedding or reception venue Willow Harbor should definitely be on you list of places to check out! What a beautiful beach wedding in South Haven Michigan. In spite of the rain Kyle & Loren couldn’t stop smiling all day and finally when the rain stopped for the reception they ended up with an incredibly beautiful evening for their wedding reception at Lake Bluff Inn & Suites. While it can be a bit tricky to shoot an outdoor wedding in the rain most professional photographers will
have gear that can withstand everything other than a downpour so it really just comes down to whether the bride and groom are up for getting a bit damp. Lucky for me Kyle & Loren just went with the flow as did their family and friends, no one seemed to mind the drizzle and it certainly did not dampen the mood one bit! We ended up taking pictures at Packard Park Beach where the ceremony was before heading over to the South Pier in South Haven and finally ended up at Lake Bluff Inn & Suites for the wedding reception. It ended up being a perfect evening and the bride and groom celebrated with their friends and family by setting of sky lanterns which were absolutely beautiful to watch, I think everyone would have agreed that it was the perfect way to end the wedding day! Congratulations to the very happy couple!

This family portrait session on the beach has been a long time in the making, when Jodi first contacted me MONTHS ago to schedule her family photos in St. Joe we went back and forth trying to find just the right time to do the pictures. At one point we
almost even had to give up because our hectic schedules weren’t lining up but as luck would have it we found an open date, decided it was worth keeping the kids up late, and voila there we were on Tuesday shooting at Tiscornia Beach at 9pm at night!
Yes… you read that right, 9pm!!! As a parent the idea of kids at the beach at 9pm can be a bit scary but as a photographer one of the challenges we are constantly dealing with when shooting family pictures in the summer, is how incredibly long the days
are! Sunset doesn’t happen until 9:30pm or later during the longest days of the year and if you want great light for your pictures you either get up really early or you stay up really late. The other option of course is waiting a couple of months… the difference
between sunset in July and sunset in September is almost an hour and a half… for some kids that can be the difference between great shots and a series of melt downs… (my kids are especially good at this!) =) While having lots of experience with tantrums,
distractions, and stubbornness both as a parent and as a professional photographer makes it easier to go with the flow and get great shots, it is still definitely worth considering the time of year you’re going to do the pictures! Of course that being said, if
you’re like the Price family you can probably just go for it… these kids were pros the whole night, smiling, posing, hugging, running, you name it they were up for it and we all had a great time!! By the end of the night we were all sandy and tired but I for
one think it was well worth it, we captured some beautiful pictures and hopefully managed to preserve some wonderful memories forever! If you like these family pictures you can check out even more Family Portraits here!

Hi Diana,
Your name sounds soooo familiar, are you part of the extended Heise clan? My apologies if I’m guessing wrong! =)
Thanks for stopping by and commenting, I’m glad you’re enjoying the work!
Ben
Gwen and Kam flew in from NY recently to wrap up some last minute wedding planning and we decided to try and squeeze in a quick engagement shoot on the beach. While most people might associate NY with NYC these two are actually some sort of
environmental scientists… if it weren’t so late I’d remember exactly what type but suffice it to say they have cool jobs and Gwen is actually doing something very similar to what I’d always envisioned myself doing when I first went to college. I was slightly
envious when she was telling me about how she’s outdoors all the time and get’s to drive boats for “work” but then she pointed out that while that’s definitely cool, she ends up freezing outside during the winter. I guess you win some and you loose some.
The other thing I found out we have in common is a love for canoeing, my wife and I love going up to the Boundary Waters Wilderness Canoe area and we like to think we’re pretty tough when we do a 40 mile loop through the wilderness over the course
of 5 days but these guys do a race every year where they paddle 90 miles in 3 days!!!! I still haven’t decided if thats insanely cool or just plain insane. =) Regardless we had a great time sharing stories, talking about their upcoming wedding day and of course
taking pictures! It’s hard to beat spending an afternoon on the beach with a fun loving couple like Gwen and Kam!! If you liked these engagement photos check out even more engagement pictures here!
These pictures are from well over a month ago but I wanted to post them anyway since it’s something I don’t normally get to shoot. I was shooting at this huge business conference in Florida with an amazing team of photographers from all over the country and on the last day there was a private concert by Sting. We got to shoot in the photo pit (in front of the front row) for the first 3 songs. Granted we were there to shoot the VIPs however we still managed to get great shots of Sting at the same time. For those photographers lucky enough to make a living photographing concerts it must be a rush, I had an absolute blast shooting this concert and can’t wait for another opportunity to do something like this!
Chicago is one of my favorite places to shoot engagement photos and Millennium Park, in spite of all of the crowds, remains one of the most versatile locations in the city to take your engagement pictures. I met up with Rachael and Rhen in Chicago on a rather crazy weather day, there were severe thunderstorms just south of Chicago and while the skies looked threatening at first it
eventually turned out to be a nearly perfect photo day, slightly overcast, 70º and only a BIT crowded. One of my favorite things about engagement sessions is having the time to get to know the couple, what makes them tick, how’d they meet, what do the love to do, where to they love to travel, what do they love about one another etc and this session was no exception, we had a great time walking around Millennium Park, the Chicago River, and North Avenue Beach sharing stories and talking about wedding plans! In the end we ended up with some great pictures and I think we’d all agree, we can’t wait for the big day!

You know a couple is going to be great to work with on their wedding day to work with when they manage to have this much fun at an engagement session on the beach in spite of the crazy weather! Last Sunday started out Sunny and 65º so we were going to try for some engagement photos at sunset but half way through the afternoon some rain showers popped up over the lake, the sky clouded over, and it dropped almost 15º in 20 minutes. Normally we would have just rescheduled a shoot like this for a later date but we were getting these
engagement photos done just 2 weeks before their wedding… yes that’s right, just 2 weeks! =) Needless to say we decided to hurry up and get the pictures in while we could and in the end I think the cloudy sky and breezy weather were perfect for the pictures! Many thanks to Nate for keeping Rachael warm and to Rachael for being up for anything!!! I can’t wait for the big day… oh wait that’s right I don’t have to, see you guys Saturday! =) Check back for pictures from the big day and leave a comment for Rachel and Nate if you love the pictures!
