Wedding photography locations near Kalamazoo don’t get any better than the First Presbyterian Church and covered bridge in Richland Michigan. The First Presbyterian Church is beautiful in it’s simplicity and windows line the walls so there is always great light, it’s also in a great location only a few minutes from downtown Kalamazoo and reception venues like Gull Lake Country Club. As you can see, Alex and Jessica were blessed with a beautiful snowy day for their winter wedding and in spite of the cold the bride and groom braved the weather for some outdoor wedding pictures. After taking pictures outside the church we took off for a covered bridge that the bride and groom had spotted

As a wedding photographer I must admit that I was geeked when we were walking up to this covered bridge in the falling snow, and I think the pictures speak to themselves because there’s just something magical about winter wedding pictures when the snow is falling! You never know what you’re going to get when you shoot a winter wedding, especially in a place like Kalamazoo Michigan, but with a little luck, and a bride that is willing to brave the cold for the sake of cool pictures you can do just about anything! Gull Lake Country club has to be one of the most beautiful reception venues for winter wedding photography in all of Southwest Michigan and as of right now it’s definitely my favorite! What makes Gull Lake Country Club such a great reception venue for wedding photographers?

You’ve just got to love family portraits on the beach, especially when the kids are this adorable and the family is laid back and up for just about anything! The focus here was definitely on the kids but we managed to squeeze in a couple of quick family shots and I love how everything turned out! Also, this was a 2 photographer wedding and I’ve included a couple of shots of the other photographer working the same shot as I am… one of the great things about 2 photographers is that when they work as a team you don’t just get “more” photos you get complimentary photos that work together to capture a more complete wedding story. I just love the “behind the scenes” feel of the photos, it gives you an idea of just what it might be like to have your picture taken on the wedding day!!

Jeremy and Carolyn Smith - Absolutely beautiful it was!! This was my wedding and I can definelty say that The Allure was indeed a diamond in the rough. Ben Pancoast did such a wonderful job telling the story of our wedding through photgraphy that even 1 year later I still look at the pictures weekly! We couldn’t have asked for a better team of photgraphers to share our memories with. Our pictures are also located in multiple issues of “Veils and Vows”,”Shore” and “Wedding Essentials” magazine if you wanted to see the ad itself and read more on the venue. I would highly recommend The Allure and Ben Pancoast for any event. A big shout out to our DJ Chris Pahl from the “Party People” as well. The fabulous lighting set off the pictures in the most amazing way I have ever seen! It was breathtaking and absoultely stunning walking in and seeing it for the first time. If you want a wedding to remember take full advantage of this comment, you won’t be disappointed. Thanks again to everyone for making our wedding day one that will be remembered forever!

    Kristin Rumer - Hello,
My fiancé and I are planning a June 3rd wedding and are looking at different venues. I know a lot of venues are already booked for the month of June and I was wondering if you still had that date available. We are planning on around 200 people.

    Thank you!
    Kristin Rumer

I’ve known Jackie for about as long as I can remember, we grew spending the summers in Michigan down the street from one another, and our families have always been connected at the hip so when she asked me if I’d be willing to travel to Saint Louis and shoot her wedding of course I said yes! While I love shooting weddings normally this was a particularly fun one because my entire family was there… my sister was one of the maids of honor, my brother flew in from DC, my parents were there, and of course my wife and 2 kids were there too!! It was a beautiful day filled with wonderful moments and at the end of it all you just had to wonder… could 2 people be any happier together? I doubt it! Congratulations you guys!

    Uncle Jim - Mr Photographer!
What a great video. Not quite as much fun as being there but close. Loved the use of their wedding dance song as the background music. My favorite part… Jackie and Banks coming… coming… coming down the aisle, a pause in the music, then Jay smilin’ at his bride. You timed that perfectly.
I’ve shared this with several friends and they think you are GOO-OO-OOD! Fantastic.
And great to see you, Ben – Jim (thanks for putting me in)

mark stover - Beautiful work from you again Ben! What did you use to create this fantastic slide show??

  • August 6, 2010 - 5:19 pm

budha - great pics but the slide transition was super awkward. too fast. too random. took away from the pics.

  • August 11, 2010 - 5:54 am

Ben - Totally agree on the super awkward way to fast transitions… unfortunately I just couldn’t cut any more photos (I probably could but didn’t want to) AND I wanted to stick with their first dance song. Ideal no… but in the end this was meant more as an overview of the day than a finished product. Of course I were to actually do this for a client I think you’re right, I’d probably have to come up with another song or fewer pictures so it would be easier to watch. Glad you liked the photos, thanks for taking the time to comment!!

This is the first time I’ve had an opportunity to shoot engagement photos on campus at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor but I certainly hope it’s not the last! Engagement pictures are fun to shoot just about anywhere but on a campus as beautiful as UofM’s
Engagement photos on the campus of the University of Michigan.
the possibilities for pictures are basically endless, we could have spent another 2 hours just walking around finding random places to take pictures but in the end we decide to call it a day and go eat something instead ha ha! One thing that I think helped make

this engagement shoot so successful at UofM was the lack of a plan… ok correction, it wasn’t like we didn’t plan anything, we just planned NOT to have a set plan which is usually for the best when it comes to engagement photos and here’s why. When you are

shooting at a place for the first time or even a place you’re familiar with it’s almost impossible to know exactly what sort of light you’re going to have to work with and what might be a great location for a fun portrait in the morning could potentially not work

at all in the afternoon or vice versa. While any photographer worth their salt can make just about anything “work” you’re much better off if you can work WITH the light and either compliment it with your own light from a flash or a reflector or something like

that. The last resort is typically over powering the sun although that’s always an option if you bring along the right equipment. Personally speaking when I’m doing an engagement session I travel light, work with the light as much as possible and that worked

out great for these portraits in Ann Arbor!! When I met up with Alex and Jessica by the Union we decided we’d just go check out the campus and look for places with great light, the fact that they were so open to different possibilities meant we could focus on area’s with great light at that moment rather than trying to stick to a pre-determined schedule. In the end I think the engagement pictures turned out great and I can’t wait to go back to the campus at the University of Michigan for more engagement photos in the future! Congratulations to the amazing couple, Alex and Jessica, thanks for wandering around campus with me, I hope you love the pictures as much as I do!

Drea - Beautiful shots! Which building on campus has that archway?

My sister in-law tied the knot this weekend at a beautiful park in Southwest Michigan. The wedding ceremony was short and sweet and it was hard to miss just how excited the happy couple was to finally be married! While the entire day was lots of fun my favorite

part as usual was the photo walk. As soon as the ceremony and reception were drawing to a close the happy couple waved good-bye to the guests and off we went to capture some beautiful pictures in the fading sunlight. One of the things I love about

shooting weddings in Southwest Michigan are the limitless possibilities for beautiful pictures that you can find almost anywhere you go. This vineyard for instance wasn’t a planned stop and in fact it isn’t really much of a vineyard it was just a field of grapes next to

Family Christmas Card Picture

Merry Christmas everyone, and thank you to all of the family, friends and clients who have helped make this such a great year! I can’t wait to see what sorts of adventures 2010 will bring. Here is the family Christmas card… well actually one of 2, neither of which were finished until Christmas Eve’s eve and have yet to be sent out! Yes I know that makes me a Christmas Card procrastinator but what can I do other than thank my wonderful wife for being so patient with me! As you’ve probably already guessed these are our kids, Elijah will be 6mo old on Christmas, and Ellee just turned 3. I am so blessed! I hope your Christmas holiday has been as wonderful as ours and that you have a very happy new year!

Taking engagement photos in Chicago is always fun, because there are just so many possible locations to shoot in and around the city, except I found out, during the winter time! I met up with Chris and Erika to do a fun winter engagement shoot in Downtown

was too busy, Pazzo’s downtown was closed, Union Station was closed for an Event (which looked like it was going to be really cool) but regardless it was disappointing not to be able to shoot out in the open, The Winter Garden in the Harold Washington Library

was closed for an Event as well! As you can tell there’s a trend here… indoor locations especially on the weekends in Chicago are not easy to come by but that’s ok, we were still able to get some great shots outside! Luckily it wasn’t as cold out as it might have

been and we were able to brave the cold in between indoor locations and get some fun pictures! The only time we really had to give up on a shot because of how cold it was were the photos out on North Avenue Beach looking back at the Chicago Skyline. I think we were all wishing we were in a Starbucks somewhere with a hot drink of any sort and I think next time I attempt a winter engagement shoot our first stop is going to be to get a hot chocolate that will hopefully keep us warm while were having fun!

Fall is one of my favorite times of the year for engagement photos in Chicago, especially downtown in and around the Art Institute and Millennium Park! It never ceases to amaze me just how much fall color you can find in a city the size of Chicago but I guess

and capture images you simply couldn’t capture close to home, of course when the destination is a place like the Devils Thumb Ranch it just makes your job that much easier. Devils Thumb Ranch is a 5000 acre ranch located in the Rocky Mountains just 1 hour

west of Denver, it offers brides and grooms all of the amenities of a world class resort yet maintains a uniquely rustic feel. While it offers vacationers a wealth of outdoor activities to choose from like horseback riding, hiking, fishing, and skiing in the winter what

makes this a special place to be married is the fact that you don’t feel like you’re getting married at a resort, in fact the entire wedding felt like it was out in the mountains miles from anywhere. The bride got ready in one of the ridge top cabins overlooking

the valley and resort below and we actually did the “first look” on the steps of the cabin. From there we went to a meadow for a couple of quick portraits with the bride and groom and then on to the ceremony site which the Devils Thumb Ranch has set up

near the Broad Axe Barn which acts as the reception site for most of the weddings there. This location is a photographers dream because the wedding ceremony looks out over an expansive meadow which covers the valley that runs up towards thedevils thumb portraits, bride and groom, wedding Colorado

mountains. You simply could not find a more peaceful or beautiful place to get married and whats most amazing is the fact that you’re just an hour from Denver!

After the wedding ceremony ended we took a few more pictures with the bride and groom as well as their bridal party before heading to the barn for the reception. The Broad Axe Barn is as simple as it is beautiful and was the perfect setting for an incredible night of dancing and celebration.

All in all it was one of the most beautiful weddings I’ve ever photographed and the pictures here are just the smallest sampling of pictures captured that day, it was almost impossible to narrow them down enough to fit it all on one blog post and I feel like I’ve left so many favorites out.

I just hope I have the opportunity to shoot another wedding at the Devils Thumb Ranch in the future so that I have an excuse to share even more beautiful pictures from this amazing place. Thank you Dave & Jessica for allowing me to be a part of this

A few weeks ago I had the chance to shoot engagement photos at Sunrise in Chicago. It always amazes me how many people have lived in Chicago for years and never taken the time to go down to the lake to watch the sun come up and light up theChicago Engagement Photo at Sunrise.
Chicago skyline early in the morning. While the sunrise in Chicago can be a hit or miss thing due to the weather when you catch a beautiful sunrise few things compare to just how beautiful the city looks in the early morning light. I met up with Brad & Sabrina

before it was even light out, we weren’t sure exactly when the sun would begin to rise and I ended up guessing way to early, but we only had to wait a little while before the sun started to warm up the sky. Unfortunately it was a pretty overcast morning in

Chicago until about 45 minutes after sunrise when the clouds finally broke and we got some great light on the skyline! After shooting along the lake for a while we headed downtown and did some pictures along the river, the Chicago River is an amazing
